Joseph Carvalko
Of COunsel
Joe Carvalko, Of Counsel to Wave Law®, is a distinguished patent lawyer with a broad set of legal, scientific and technical skills. He has obtained substantial numbers of patents for clients, litigated dozens of cases in intellectual property, commercial and criminal defense, including as a sole practitioner, law firm partner, and in-house corporate counsel. He has served as General Counsel and top patent counsel for several public companies.
Prior to joining Wave Law®, Joe has most recently advised clients on intellectual property strategy related to patent, copyrights and trademarks, including counsling and managing litigation related to patents and trademarks in areas such as the Internet, computers, business methods, communication systems, medical arts, electronics and mechanics. Joe’s practice has additionally focused on software contract negotiation, and trademark litigation before Federal courts, most notably in 2017-2019 as the lead defense lawyer in connection with a substantial intellectual property infringement claim.
For the past 15 years, Joe has taught Law, Science and Technology at Quinnipiac University, School of Law. He is a frequent lecturer on legal and technical topics.
In 2019, Joe was appointed chair of the Technology and Ethics Working Research Group, Interdisciplinary Center for Bioethics at Yale University.
Prior to his legal career, Joe worked as an electrical engineer and programmer in the aerospace, biomedical research, and business machine (point of sale and imaging systems) industries.
Additional achievements include:
· Award of 17 patents (1978-2020), some jointly, related to inventions in artificial intelligence, electronics, biomedical devices, and fuel systems.
· Published author of nine books, three of which are academic and relate to law, science and the humanities (e.g.,Conserving Humanity at the Dawn of Posthuman Technology, (Palgrave Macmillan, 2020, 400 pp.); co-authored (Cara Morris) The Science and Technology Guidebook for Lawyers (ABA Pub., 2014, 398 pp.); The Techno-Human Shell: A Jump in the Evolutionary Gap (Sunbury Press, 2013)), and numerous papers published in scientific and technical journals.
Joe is a graduate of the Quinnipiac University School of Law, Fairfield University School of Arts and Sciences, and Fairfield University School of Engineering.
Joe is actively involved and has been involved in numerous professional organizations, including the following:
· Institute of Electrical, Electronic, Engineers (IEEE), including as member of the Publications Board of IEEE Transactions on Technology and Society, and Associate Editor of IEEE Society and Technology magazine
· Member of the Society on Social Implications of Technology
